DGermany lost the war but won the peace. That’s what many Germans used to say about their country with humility and pride. When Russia invaded Ukraine last week, the concerned question was raised: Is Germany in danger of failing as a peacemaker that it sees itself as? And: What can one expect from this force of peace in times of war? Chancellor Scholz’s speech in the Bundestag, one of the most important in the history of the Federal Republic, is a serious attempt to answer this question.
The primary goal of German politics in Europe has always been to keep the European Union together. This claim deserves respect when you consider how much centrifugal forces have increased within the Union. The Federal Republic’s geographic location, economic strength and political authority predestine it to fulfill this European function. She has proven herself in this role as well.
