In the end, Jannik Sinner also stopped: after the historic victory at the Australian Open in which he won his first Slam title and the triumph at the Miami Open, he lost in the semifinals against Stefanos Tsitsipas at the 2024 Rolex Monte Carlo Masters.
In almost three hours of competition, Tsitsipas defeated Sinner by 2 sets to 1, with scores of 6-4 / 3-6 / 6-4, beating the fittest of the top ten tennis players in the world. In the final, the Greek will find the winner of the challenge between Novak Djokovic and Casper Ruud. For Sinner this is only the second defeat in 2024.
Earlier this month, in an interview with Sky, it was in fact Nole Djokovic who crowned the South Tyrolean champion after his victory in Miami against the Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov, defeated in just over an hour of play in the final with a partial score of 6-1 / 6-3. “At the moment Sinner is the best player in the world by distance, without any doubt,” said the number one in the ATP rankings, who will now challenge the Norwegian Ruud to reach Tsitsipas in the final in Monte Carlo.
The missed final between Sinner and Djokovic does not affect the duel at the top for the world record. The South Tyrolean defends many points in this tournament in Monte Carlo, but then almost nothing in the next ones between Madrid and Rome, just like Djokovic. But at Roland Garros the Serbian will defend the title and 2,000 points while Sinner practically nothing having lost early in 2023. So already in June after Paris, Sinner could reach first place in the ATP rankings, a feat never achieved by any Italian tennis player.
