The daughter of Tony Curtis and Janet Leigh knew how to disengage herself from the roles of victim in horror films with a special gift for comedy
The actress and writer Jamie Lee Curtis, pigeonholed despite herself as the best ‘scream queen’ in cinema, for the number of horror films she has made and for her way of screaming in the ‘Halloween’ saga, is an actress All-terrain vehicle, with a special gift for comedy (‘Between crooks the game is on’, ‘A fish called Wanda’), who has developed a career as a writer of children’s books in parallel with her work in front of the cameras.
Daughter of actors Tony Curtis and Janet Leigh (with whom she grew up after her parents’ divorce), she was born in Santa Monica (California) on November 22, 1958. She studied at the University of the Pacific in Stockton. She married Christopher Guest in December 1984 and became Baroness of Haden-Guest, Essex County, when her husband’s father passed away in 1996. The couple is today one of the oldest in Hollywood.
He made his film debut at the age of twenty and with the help of John Carpenter, with the horror film ‘Halloween night’ (1978). From that moment the actress got the title of ‘the scream queen’, which would be consecrated with her intervention in the various continuations of the Halloween series, such as ‘Halloween II’ (1981), ‘Halloween H20: 20 years later’ (1998), ‘Halloween: Resurrection’ (2002) and the following sequels. Fifty years later, she repeats with another unforgettable comedy, ‘A Fish Called Wanda’ (1988), in which she was part of a cast that included John Cleese and Kevin Kline, which led to her being a Golden Globe nominee for best actress in comedy or musical and the BAFTA for best actress. He coincides with Arnold Schwarzenegger and director James Cameron in the action comedy ‘Risky Lies’ (1994), in which he played a woman who was married to a spy for the United States government and who was involved in a dangerous plot. Her performance is worth a Golden Globe for best actress in a comedy or musical and a nomination for the Screen Actors Guild Award for best supporting actress. Years later, she will be nominated for an Emmy for best actress in a miniseries or telefilm for the telefilm ‘Nicholas’ Gift’ (1998). In 1996 she appears in ‘Ferocious Creatures’ and in 1999 she released the science fiction film ‘Virus’ that pairs her with William Baldwin and Donald Sutherland.
In 2001, she played Geoffrey Rush’s wife in ‘El sastre de Panamá’, in 2003 she starred in ‘Ponte en mi lugar’, with Lindsay Lohan, a remake of the 1976 film with the same name and which led to a new candidacy for the Globo de Oro for best actress in a comedy or musical. The actress has also appeared in films such as’ A Chihuahua in Beverly Hills (2008), along with Piper Perabo, and the comedy ‘Otra vez tú’ (2010), in which she shared the bill with Sigourney Weaver. She is also a regular on many television series, some of which she has also been a co-producer.
Without disgust horror films, in 2015, Curtis joined the cast of ‘Scream Queens’, a horror-comedy anthology series starring the actress and Emma Roberts. With his participation, Jamie Lee Curtis returned to his beginnings in the cinema in a series that lives up to its name, as it is considered the ‘original scream queen’. It would not last long, because in 2017 the series would be canceled due to a very low audience, and in 2019 it gives life to one of the characters of ‘Daggers from the back’.
