Jaime Camil, whom we know thanks to successful soap operas such as ‘Las tontas no van al cielo’ or ‘La fea más bella’, is part of the musical ‘Schmigadoon!’ of Apple TV, in which he not only sings, but also plays a co-starring role. Camil has become one of the Latin actors with the greatest projection in Hollywood. He currently hosts the CBS show ‘The Talk’ and in two months he will debut in the film KIMI under the direction of Steven Soderbergh. We spoke exclusively with the interpreter through Zoom from his residence in Los Angeles.
What is your character’s role in ‘Schmigadoon!’?
The ‘Doc’ Jorge López, represented the possibility of a new love or relationship for the leading couple, the love triangle. The ‘Doc’ is a very nice role, which will help Josh realize that maybe not only should he change his attitude, but Cecil is also concentrating on the wrong things and maybe that’s why he doesn’t realize it. of the great man that he is. All of us schmigatonians (as I call them) help the main couple to realize their challenges.
And what has been your challenge when participating in this musical?
I love being in this project, I loved it from the beginning, since they did me the favor of writing the character for me. But perhaps the important challenge was staying on set. It was filmed in Vancouver (Canada) and in an ideal world our characters, the shmigatonians, would have filmed between 15 and 20 days, but since the borders of Canada were closed due to the pandemic and we could only enter with work visas, we had to stay for three months. Obviously, I traveled with my dog, my children and my wife, I rented a house. It was a bit difficult, but thank goodness my kids had zoom classes and Vancouver has the same time as Los Angeles, so it fitted in perfectly.
How comfortable do you feel doing musicals?
It’s where I feel most comfortable as an artist and ‘Schmigadoon!’ It is a super cute project for the whole family, where we allow ourselves to have fun and make fun of ourselves. In addition, it has brilliantly written songs and spectacular choreographies that infect you with happiness and joy. For me it was a gift from God.
How much do you think your career has advanced from a time to that part?
It is inherent. When you move forward, doing more projects and looking for new horizons, your career is modified to what you need at that moment.
How has that escalation been, taking into account that you are an actor with Latino roots? Not everyone has the opportunity or the easy way to get to Hollywood.
It is not easy for anyone to conquer more markets or new horizons, but I really like challenges and face life without fear, with great responsibility and respect. I put on my shirt and say: ‘I’m going to give it all my heart’. Doors may be closed for me, they may not, because if you face some situations with fear, you are already closing psychological doors in your mind that you do not even know if you are going to be able to face. That happens a lot in our Latin American culture.
Do you think that the industry has changed and now there is greater openness to actors of other nationalities?
It is still difficult because Hollywood has its ‘list’ of Latin American actors, it is difficult for them to open the window and give others a chance. There is a long way to go, but we are doing it.
What do you think about more stories being made through streaming? How do you see the future of productions?
We no longer live in the world of the big networks that were the owners of the truth, of the big projects, awarded and recognized. Now, the entertainment business has gone to platforms, to web series, there are millions of studios like Apple TV that are doing incredible projects. So, those who have to adapt to what is happening now are the big chains and studios. But having more competition and opening the market makes the industry much healthier and of quality.
What’s next for you?
Well is my first movie with Steven Soderbergh, KIMI, which will be out in a couple of months on HBO Max. Meanwhile, all my energy is in people giving every chance to ‘Schmigadoon!’ because it is a great musical, with content that heals your soul and fills you with happiness with positive messages.
