The Italian athletics federation said that Olympic champion Lamont Marcel Jacobs withdrew from the Rome and Oslo Diamond League meetings due to not recovering from a muscle injury, and the 27-year-old sprinter, who became the first Italian to win the 100 meters at the Olympics in Tokyo last year, injured during his victory in the 100 meter in Savona, Italy in May and missed the Prefontaine Diamond League meeting in Eugene, America last week.
“The examination showed that Olympic champion Marcel Lamont Jacobs has not fully recovered from a muscle injury diagnosed last week,” the Italian Federation added in a statement.
Jacobs, who ended the 2021 season early due to fatigue, said he hoped to recover before the world championships kicks off in July.
“I will miss the next two races in Rome and Oslo… I will continue with physiotherapy and light training to recover well for the World Championships in Eugene in July,” he wrote on social media.
Jacobs had achieved a European time of 9.80 seconds in the 100 meters final at the Tokyo Olympics, and then won the second gold in the relay race of 4 by 100 meters.
