“It’s just not good for the trans community”
In the dispute over trans swimmer Lia Thomas, reality actress Caitlyn Jenner, who was born 72 years ago with male sexual characteristics, is now speaking up. Thomas, who competed as a man for the University of Pennsylvania three years before her gender reassignment and is now competing as a woman, distorts the competition. “Biological boys shouldn’t be competing in women’s competitions,” Jenner told Fox on Wednesday. Thomas has a larger cardiovascular system and a larger respiratory system. “Her hands are just bigger and she swims faster. I feel sorry for the other women athletes,” said Jenner, who won the gold medal in the decathlon as Bruce Jenner at the 1976 Olympics. The Thomas cause had fueled the debate about transgender people in sports in the United States in recent months. Twenty-two-year-old Thomas had broken the most women’s records at the University of Pennsylvania after undergoing a gender reassignment. The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) allows trans athletes born with male gender characteristics to compete as women after suppressing testosterone production with drugs for at least a year. “I have no idea why Thomas is doing this,” Jenner said. “It’s just not good for the trans community and for women’s sports.” (ceh.)
