Climate change is leaving visible traces in the Alps. Pictures from Italy now also show this. The country’s largest glacier is broken.
Trent – As a result of climate change, the earth is warming. The consequence: more and more glaciers are melting or disappearing completely. This year has Venezuela became the first country in South America to lose all of its glaciers. Also in the Alps Italy global warming is visible.
Italy’s largest glacier riddled with holes: experts sound the alarm
Currently, the Mandrone glacier, located at the head of the Genova Valley, is riddled with huge holes. The largest glacier in Italy is part of the Adamello glacier complex in Trentino. But over the years it has lost a lot of mass. Its structure has become unstable, which repeatedly leads to circular collapses.
The Glaciological Commission SAT captured these impressive images. Although the glacier looks “good” at the current time of year, “several circular collapses have been occurring for years,” the organization said in a post Facebook. This could accelerate the retreat of the glacier front. It wasn’t until the summer that photos were taken worrying natural spectacle in the Adamello glacier complex shown.
According to the Italian news portal Il Dolomiti Italy’s largest glacier has lost an area of around 50 hectares since 2015. This corresponds to around 70 football fields. “Unfortunately, we also find the same situation on other glaciers. “The face of the glacier becomes flat, the meltwater penetrates into the lower part of the glacier, and the resulting cavities lead to circular collapses,” describes Cristian Ferrari, glaciologist and president of SAT, to the portal.
Pictures show impressive Alpine phenomenon in Italy: But experts are worried
Ferrari predicts that the rocky outcrop that formed last year is “likely to replace the glacier front in the next few years.” And further: “The moment these circular collapses occur, the glacier front will retreat more quickly.”
Due to mild temperatures, the lower part of Mandrone loses three meters of its ice and snow every year, Mauro Gaddo, an environmental engineer, told the newspaper Trento Today. “These glaciers are increasingly threatened with extinction.” The images from the Mandrone glacier may be impressive, but they are worrying experts. Like so many things, they are a reaction to man-made climate change.
Glaciers play a crucial role in the global economy climate. Not only do they serve as a cooling system for the planet, but they also act as massive water reservoirs. After the oceans, they are the largest water reservoirs. But climate changes are causing these enormous areas of snow and ice to gradually disappear. Also in Experts in Austria are worried about the location of the glacier. (kas)
