The Prime Minister Mario Draghi and the Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, on the occasion of the bilateral held in Barcelona, launch a message clear: there is no competition, it is not true that if it goes badly, Italy benefits Spain or vice versa, on the contrary, greater coordination is needed, together Rome and Madrid are stronger. An important appointment, preceded by the award that the Italian premier receives from the “Cercle d’Economia”, for his work in the construction of Europe during his period as number one of the ECB.
“Together we are stronger”: Sanchez repeats it first, then Draghi reiterates it. “We have more capacity to present projects – the common line -. Italy and Spain represent 25% of the European GDP. We can look to the future with more confidence”. It is only Sanchez to announce that Spain will lift the obligation to wear masks from June 26, but both the Spanish Prime Minister and the Italian Prime Minister underline that the GDP estimates could be revised upwards. Italy and Spain share the same challenges. They can collaborate on the ecological and digital transition, in sectors such as tourism and fashion. The national plans of Italy to Spain “very ambitious in terms of investments, also accompanied by a firm commitment to reforms” and therefore “if both countries execute these plans efficiently and effectively, we will open a new phase for the European Union “.
On the National Recovery and Resilience Plan, Italy and Spain have made the positions of the two countries weigh: Draghi hopes for collaboration between Europe and the governments, and now, on the eve of the European Council in Brussels, both Draghi and Sanchez are pressing on European Council for an urgent response from the EU. The imperative is that Europe concludes the Immigration and Asylum Pact, an objective for which “it is necessary to take into account the vision of the countries of first entry”. We need to balance the principles of humanity, solidarity and shared responsibility, the line of both. Countries of first entry cannot therefore be penalized. An agreement must be found on relocations.
The edition of the dialogue forum between Italy and Spain is held in Barcelona. Representatives from the business and political worlds participate, including ministers D Maio, Cingolani and Colao. Relations between Rome and Madrid are solid, “decisive now that we must manage the recovery from the pandemic and define policies and investments for the future”.
There are numbers to certify the economic and commercial relations between Italy and Spain: in 2020, Italy exported goods worth around 20 billion to Spain and so did Spain to Italy. Italian direct investments in Spain amount to over 40 billion, and in our country there are about 11 billion of Spanish direct investments. About 250,000 Italians are resident in Spain. In the bilateral between Draghi and Sanchez, therefore, focus also on the common agenda between the two countries. And the Spanish Prime Minister praises Draghi: “When the President of the Council speaks to the European Council, we all remain silent and listen”, he said.
Dragons says he is honored by testimony of affection and esteem which comes from Spain. “He says he is moved”, the words “you said are excessive, in my opinion, I never thought I had achieved so much but thank you very much”, said Draghi, “thanks again, I’m blushing”. Then the curtain at the opening of the Italian-Spanish dialogue forum: “I lost my speech – says the premier going up on stage -, not that I really need it”. And finally, thanks to the Italians who live in Spain: “Many students come to the Erasmus program, I remember my son: Spain is the favorite destination of Italian students, and vice versa, but he couldn’t come here” .
