Mario Draghi considered the offensive launched by Moscow “unjustified and unjustifiable” while showing Italy’s closeness “to the Ukrainian people and institutions
“Unjustified and unjustifiable.” Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi described the Russian attack on Ukraine with these words. With a statement issued early this Thursday morning, the Government of Rome has condemned the military action ordered by Moscow while showing Italy’s closeness “to the Ukrainian people and institutions at this dramatic moment.” Draghi has assured that he is working with the rest of the European and NATO allies to offer an “immediate response, with unity and determination” to the Russian aggression against his neighboring country.
Until now, Italy had not wanted to use a particularly harsh tone towards Moscow, in part because of its great dependence on Russian gas, which last year covered 43% of its needs for this raw material. The League, one of the parties that are part of the coalition that supports the Draghi Executive, has also historically maintained a close relationship with the Vladimir Putin regime. What has happened in the last few hours, however, changes the scenario and could lead to Italy deploying around a thousand soldiers in Hungary and Bulgaria. That is the initial availability that the Government of Rome offered to NATO in recent weeks.
Draghi’s words of condemnation come after the Pope made an appeal yesterday during the general audience in favor of peace, although once again it is confirmed that, when the drums of war sound, the Pontiffs have little weight to silence them. Francis regretted that the diplomatic efforts of recent weeks had not managed to prevent the opening of “increasingly alarming” scenarios. He also warned that it is “everyone’s peace” that is being threatened by “partisan interests” and invited those with “political responsibilities” to make a “serious examination of conscience before God.” He finally urged not to carry out actions that could cause “more suffering to the populations, destabilize coexistence between nations and discredit international law.”
