The heavy rain that started on Saturday morning caused a landslide that has destroyed buildings and buried cars in the mud. Rescue operations are still ongoing.
Three a person has been found dead on the island of Ischia in Italy after Saturday’s landslide, Italian media reports. In addition, at least 10 people are still missing.
A landslide from the mountains hit the small town of Casamicciola Terme on Ischia early Saturday morning, taking cars into the sea and filling houses with mud.
The dead were trapped under the landslide. The first of the dead found is a 31-year-old woman, the second a small child and the third an old woman. La Republica says that more dead are expected to be found.
In addition, divers are looking for people lost in the sea near the harbor, where mud, stones and debris from the mountains have flowed, reports the news agency Reuters. Bad weather has made rescue work difficult.
Italy has declared a state of emergency due to the landslide and granted two million euros in emergency aid to the island, according to news agencies and Italian media.
The island of Ischia is densely populated and many of the houses were built illegally, so they are at a higher risk of being damaged by floods and earthquakes.
La Stampa says that four natural disasters have occurred on the island in 16 years.
Head of the administrative region of Campania Vincenzo De Luca says he expects more money from the Italian government for the damage. According to him, houses built in dangerous areas, such as on the banks of rivers, should be demolished in order to avoid similar disasters in the future.
The island of Ischia is located at the northern end of the Gulf of Naples, about 25 kilometers from Naples. The volcanic island is a popular tourist destination because of its hot springs.
