Italy A petition to legalize euthanasia is progressing to a referendum in Italy

The vote can be held as early as next year.

Over 750,000 Italians have signed a petition to legalize euthanasia, which means a referendum.

The referendum limit is half a million signatures. The vote can be held as early as next year.

Existing Assisted suicide is punishable by 5 to 12 years in prison in Italy.

In the second year, however, an exception was made to the law that allows euthanasia in cases where the suffering of an incurably ill person is intolerable.

However, the patient must be in a condition where he or she is considered to be able to make an informed and considered decision about euthanasia, which excludes some of the terminally ill from the law.

“Not everyone has the right to euthanasia. I signed to guarantee free choice for people who do not have the opportunity to travel to countries where euthanasia is legal, ”explained the well-known author and journalist Roberto Saviano.
