Lombardy, the most populous region in Italy, has declared a state of emergency due to an extended drought, while calling on residents to conserve water as much as possible.
A decree signed by the regional president, Attilio Fontana, said Friday that residents should use water very sparingly and only when necessary.
According to the regional government’s recommendations, councils should also limit drinking water to non-essential activities, including watering parks, golf courses, soccer fields or cleaning roads.
The Lombardy region also called on the central government to establish a control center to monitor the current water crisis across the country.
Lombardy is located in northern Italy and is home to about 10 million people.
The Po River dried up in some areas due to a severe drought caused by weeks of poor rains. The water level in Lake Garda has also decreased.
Drinking water has also been rationalized in some areas of the Piedmont region in northwestern Italy.
