Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte intends to resign. He will announce this on Tuesday, January 26, at a meeting of the Council of Ministers, reports on Monday, January 25, press service government palace of Chigi.
“On Tuesday at 09:00 (11:00 Moscow time – Ed.) A meeting of the Council of Ministers is convened, during which Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte will announce that he is resigning. After that it will transmit [соответствующее] a statement to the President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella, ”the statement reads.
The prime minister’s resignation is due to the fact that the ruling coalition of the 5 Star Movement and the Democratic Party has lost an absolute majority in the upper house of parliament due to the withdrawal of the small party “Living Italy” of ex-prime minister Matteo Renzi.
On January 14, La Repubblica reported that Conte planned on January 18 to raise the issue of confidence in the government in the Chamber of Deputies of the national parliament. On the same day it became known that the Italian prime minister informed the head of the republic about his intention to clarify in parliament the political situation that had developed after the resignation of two ministers from the Living Italy party.
It is about the resignation from the posts of the Italian Minister of Agriculture and the Minister for Equal Opportunities. Both politicians are members of the above party. In this regard, the current coalition may lose a majority in parliament without the votes of “Living Italy”. The head of the party, ex-prime minister Matteo Renzi, said that Living Italy is ready to go into opposition.
Thus, the government runs the risk of receiving a vote of no confidence, and the prospect of a government crisis has taken shape in the country amid disagreements over a recovery plan from the consequences of the pandemic, since most of the funding comes from the European Union.
Conte, 56, has served as head of the Italian government since June 2018.
