The plan of the monetary authority is for all ATMs to have this function in December 2022. To move forward with the implementation, a schedule was designed so that ATMs that already have biometric readers enable this mode before June 30 of this year.
“The footprint is an option that can reduce friction between users and technological devices, also facilitating the payments of social benefits to people who do not have a debit card,” they said in a statement.
Using the fingerprint will be optional, as other systems, such as security codes, will remain in force.
Anyway, to operate at the ATM the fingerprint will not suffice, since it will also be necessary to identify yourself with your DNI number or with a personal password (PIN).
“The use, which will be optional, also favors access to ATMs by groups in society with a higher degree of vulnerability, facilitating their financial inclusion at quality levels,” the statement details.
The use of the fingerprint is possible because Argentina has a centralized biometric database managed by the National Registry of Persons (Renaper).
The percentage of ATMs with biometric readers should reach 35% as of December 31, 2021, 60% as of June 30, 2022 and 100% as of December 31, 2022, as stipulated in the official communication.
