‘It was cold last night!’, say the experts from Weerplaza. In fact, the first local frost of this autumn was measured last night. At Twente Airport, just above Enschede, the air cooled down to half a degree below zero. It was also hit in other places in the country.
In addition to the half-degree frost observed by the Twente weather station, the mercury dropped below freezing in several places. The lowest temperature at a height of 10 centimeters – frost on the ground – was measured in the Gelderse Hupsel. Close to the ground it even cooled down to -2.5 degrees, Weerplaza writes.
The last time it froze somewhere in our country this year was on May 8. Then the temperature in Twente dropped to -1.8 degrees. In the current climate, local frost occurs for the first time on average on October 23. The earliest date for the first local frost is September 15, 1971.
early this year
On September 16 of that year, frost occurred in several places. In Winterswijk it was then -2.4 degrees and in Soesterberg -2.2 degrees. De Bilt also had frost at the time and with -0.4 degrees it was the earliest official frost day after the summer.
Last year the temperature dropped below zero locally for the first time on October 17. Twente then recorded -0.7 degrees. This year the first frost hit the ground on September 21. Woensdrecht weather station had the scoop of the first local frost after the summer.
Frost to the ground
There is a difference between local frost and ground frost (also called night frost). The observation of local frost refers to the temperature of the outside air at a normal observation height. One and a half meters from the ground. With frost on the ground, the temperature is ten centimeters above the grass. It is considerably lower, sometimes more than five degrees.
