Russian cities face major changes in the future. Urbanist Alexei Radchenko, a specialist in urban and transport planning, spoke about this within the framework of a large-scale special project “New Society”.
“Serious transformations await us, and in 20-30 years we will not recognize our cities,” the expert is sure.
In particular, in his opinion, in the near future, public transport will become the only means of transportation for residents of Russian cities.
The expert stated that even now a personal car is not an indicator of status, they are now approaching the purchase more rationally, but there is no talk of a complete rejection of personal transport throughout the country. A good alternative in the form of a perfectly working public transport can stimulate the abandonment of private cars. “In fact, there are quite a few methods to reduce the demand for travel by private car. These are both economic – due to the cost of parking, fuel and other payments, and planning – when routes by bicycles and public transport are faster, easier and more predictable than by a private car, ”he said.
According to the urbanist, in the next ten years, with appropriate support, the construction of modern lines – both tram lines and more complex ones, like a city train – will begin. Also, in Russia, they will finally accept a bicycle and a scooter as a full-fledged transport and begin to massively design the appropriate infrastructure for them.
“By switching completely to public transport, we can significantly reduce the area covered with asphalt, giving it to parks, greenery and public spaces. Cities will become cleaner, greener, quieter and more comfortable. Streets and neighborhoods will become similar to the territory of sanatoriums, parks and resorts, “- said Radchenko.
The tendency to change the approach to public transport in Russia has become one of the central themes of the New Society cycle, a large-scale project of Lenta.ru dedicated to the changes that have already begun in Russia or will occur in the coming decades. They talk about the attitude of Russians to the environment, consumption processes, work schedules and the impact of society on climate change.
