Iván Martínez explained at the press conference prior to Sunday’s game against Ponferradina that he wants to see Zaragoza play as a team. The coach has also assured that he has been very positively surprised by Vuckic and that he is very clear about the eleven that he is going to serve, although it will not be until after tomorrow’s training when he knows for sure if he can count on Jair, Adrián and Cristian Álvarez , which today has already rejoined the group: “The idea of the game will be very clear and it does not matter which footballers are, it will be the same for ninety minutes.”
– How do you face Sunday’s game against Ponferradina?
—We have had a very good week in terms of work and knowledge and it has helped us a lot to work on all aspects of football. I am seeing them very well and we have managed to give them more confidence and clearer ideas, but in this football we have to win and that is the main idea we have for Sunday.
—This week Jair, Adrián and Cristian Álvarez have rejoined the group after their injuries. What chances do they have of entering the call?
—I have good feelings with everyone, but we have to wait for tomorrow’s training session and at the end of the session we will all evaluate together and from there we will decide on the call and possible eleven starters.
“But is Jair to play first?”
—We will have to wait 24 hours to see how it evolves from today’s training. He has good feelings and it is clear that he has in mind that the team needs him. It is more of a head issue than a physical one. He is showing us very good feelings, he is well and I am convinced that if we decided to start him, he would be prepared for it.
“And Cristian Álvarez?”
“We have to assess it tomorrow.” Today he gave us good feelings, but there are still 24 hours to go before the call and more than 48 for Sunday’s game. The goal is vital, that is clear, but the decision will be made by him. If he is not 100% or thinks he cannot be, he will not be and we will put Mouse or Azon. We have no doubt that we trust both.
– Has a change been considered on the right side with the entry of Vigaray by Tejero? Could the former act as a center-back if Jair is not in a position to play or does Javi Hernández also have his options?
“We are going to wait for tomorrow.” Vigaray is also coming off inactivity, he is giving us good feelings and has trained very well during the week. Javi Hernández has shown that he is ready to debut and we are happy with Tejero, who has trained very well all week. I am clear about the eleven that I am going to draw, but I am not going to make it official until the time of the match. In my mind I have a clear starting eleven for a specific game idea and depending on what the game demands and the result, we will start using other players.
– Another of the players who has rejoined, in this case after his international commitments, is Vuckic.
—The truth is that it was a very good feeling because I expected something else from him and he has shown me the opposite. With everything you are asking us and all the interest you are showing, I think you are a professional and now what you have to do is work and understand the idea that we have transmitted. Today we have been talking with him for a long time and I think he has to add a lot to this team. He is a forward we need.
“He says he expected something else from the Slovenian striker.” Does that have something to do with what Baraja said in his last press conference?
“I hadn’t trained with him.” Yes, I had seen quite a few training sessions, but I stick to my realism of what I have seen during the games, of his face when playing and training and of the desire that he is showing me now and his interest in loving do things well and understand my idea of football. A person who asks me, who has shown interest in returning to Zaragoza as soon as possible and who came yesterday to train without sleeping is showing you that he is a person involved and that he is clear about what he wants to be. We have already told him what we want from him and he is convinced that he can give it to us.
– How many players from the subsidiary are going to enter the call?
“Full confidence in them.” Yes, there will be quite a few players in the squad because I think we need them. Tomorrow we will see how many come, but surely there will be quite a few.
– Does the fact that there are several players in doubt condition the way you play?
“The game idea is going to be the same.” We have worked on different tactical systems, since in certain parts of the game we will need a way of playing and depending on the result we will need other systems. The players are clear about it and we are not going to depend on certain players to play with one system or another. The idea of the game will be very clear and it does not matter which footballers are there, it will be the same during the ninety minutes.
—Apart from the different game systems, which Real Zaragoza would you like to see on Sunday?
—I want a Real Zaragoza that plays as a team, that when we attack, we all attack and that when we defend, we all defend. I want a team that wants because wanting is power. The attitude and non-negotiable things on the pitch cannot be lacking. We know where we are and we know how we are and what we must do to change this dynamic. I believe that we are going to see a Zaragoza that will want to change that dynamic and with that we will have taken a first step to achieve the three points.
—The team has chained eight games without winning. To what extent would it be important to win in Ponferrada?
– It is vital to win on Sunday to change this negative dynamic that we have. I think these players need that result on Sunday. I am fully convinced that we are going to play a good game. Later, during the match, many things can happen and the result is still unfair, but I am convinced that the players we are going to choose from the beginning will try to change this negative streak that we have.
“What Ponferradina awaits?”
“We know him from top to bottom from everything we’ve seen.” It is a team very well worked by its coach, tactically they are good and have their qualities and their defects like all teams. What we are going to find is a Spartan team, which despite being behind on the scoreboard, does not decline emotionally and seeks a draw and even victory until the last minute. The last game against Malaga is a clear example. We must be very sure of what we have to do and I hope the team responds and we are better than them.
—Now that several consecutive games are coming, how are you going to distribute the minutes in the center of the field?
—I know that I can count on Zapater, Ros, James, Francho, Nick and Eguaras and they will share each other. We are going to make the best decision to face the match against Ponferradina and we are going to stick to the idea of the match. From there, we are going to decide the ones that are the best and the ones they want, since wanting is power. That is the attitude that everyone should have.
– What role can Adrián González have on this team?
—Adrián must contribute a lot to Real Zaragoza. He is a professional, has a lot of quality and has goal and arrival. Besides, due to his great experience, he is a leader in the dressing room. His colleagues recognize him like this and we, in this short time that we have been with him, have already cataloged him. He is giving everything to recover as soon as possible, but I have already told him that he has to be 100% recovered and convinced that we need him.
