Worldwide there are 1.3 billion smokers. In Mexico there are an estimated 14.6 million smokers, according to the National Institute of Public Health of Mexico (INSP) in coordination of the National Commission of Mental Health and Addictions (CONASAMA) from the Ministry of Health of Mexico.
The Pan American Health Organization considers that tobacco kills around eight million people each year (more than seven million active smokers and more than one million non-smokers but exposed to second-hand smoke). The life expectancy of these people is reduced by at least 10 years compared to those who do not smoke. And a fact that may cause chills is that according to tobacco it is the only legal consumer product that kills up to half of its consumers when used exactly according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
In Mexico A few years ago, laws began to be applied to reduce tobacco consumption in closed spaces where more people converge, from universities to bars. But this has not been enough since the use of electronic cigarettes is now more prevalent, especially among young people, which causes more severe damage to the body, especially to the respiratory tract.
Yesterday was celebrated World No Tobacco Day whose motto this year was “protect children from the interference of the tobacco industry”, which spends more than 8 billion dollars worldwide on marketing and advertising, but beyond giving figures and trying to report the damage that it causes to health, little can be done with those who have this addiction and have not decided to abandon this consumption.
