Juarez City.– The state Congresses will have the power to provide in their constitutional modifications if the election of local judges is carried out in two parts: the first in 2025 and a second in 2027 or if the complete election will take place within two years.
“What about the state ones? The constitution says state constitutions must be amended in order to make your choice. In these state constitutions they can make the decision to make part of it in 2025 and another in 2027 or all of it in 2027,” President Claudia Sheinbaum announced in her morning conference.
On Monday, the president sent to the Congress of the Union two initiatives to reform the General Law of Electoral Institutions and Procedures (LGIPE) and the General Law of the System of Means of Challenges in Electoral Matters (LGSMIME), with the aim of detailing the principles of legality, objectivity, certainty, transparency and impartiality in each of the stages of the election process of judges, ministers and magistrates.
The legal advisor of the federal Executive, Ernestina Godoy Ramos, explained, for her part, that the election of more than a thousand judges and magistrates will be carried out in two stages: the first will be carried out on the first Sunday of June 2025 and a second stage will have place in 2027, where the rest of the judges will be voted on. On both dates it will be in charge of the National Electoral Institute (INE) and the Local Public Organizations (OPLE).
Sheinbaum highlighted that during the process, the three Powers of the Union must participate in the issuance of the call and in the formation – each of them – of an Evaluation Committee, made up of five people of recognized prestige in legal activity and respecting gender parity.
“If for some reason the Court does not send the vacancies that are necessary for the call, the Senate will use the publicly available information to be able to make this call,” the president said.
On October 16, the Senate of the Republic will issue the call to the three powers of the union, who on October 31 will install an Evaluation Committee of five people.
