This newspaper asked the US Foreign Ministry to confirm reports in Colombian media according to which the United States had already agreed to participate in the meeting and which it would send to its Secretary of State Anthony Blinken.
Three weeks ago, Petro announced his intention to convene a high-level conference in Bogotá to try to unblock the rapprochement between the opposition and the government of Nicolás Maduro.
Since the details are still emerging, it would be premature to discuss the participation of the United States in that conference.
According to W Radius, the scheduled date for that summit would be next April 25 and would include heads of diplomacy from the European Unionministers of foreign relations dIn several Latin American countries, a representative of the government of Venezuela (yet to be determined) and opposition representatives.
Diplomatic sources consulted by this newspaper maintain that last week The Colombian Foreign Ministry initiated the call for the countries but there is still no list of confirmed officials.
The statement given to this newspaper by the State Department, it is worth clarifying, does not rule out their participation.
But it does indicate that Washington wants to assess the ins and outs of the conference and its attendees first, before confirming attendance and the name of who will represent it.
