Pope Francis called on Sunday (6) for an immediate end to the armed attacks in Ukraine, so that dialogue prevails and that respect for international law is restored in the country, after the invasion started by Russia 11 days ago.
What is happening in Ukraine “is not a military operation, but a war”, which “sows death, destruction and misery”, Francis said at the end of the Sunday Angelus prayer, in front of hundreds of people gathered in St. in the Vatican, many of them with Ukrainian flags.
The pontiff assured that the Holy See is “ready to do everything” for peace and revealed that two cardinals had traveled to Ukraine in recent days to bring aid. Francis also thanked journalists for their fieldwork, which allows them to “assess the cruelty of war.”
After the Angelus, the pope launched an appeal for an end to the conflict in Ukraine, a country he said flowed “rivers of blood and tears” and where “the need for humanitarian assistance grows dramatically by the hour”.
“I send a heartfelt appeal to secure humanitarian corridors and to secure and facilitate access for aid to besieged areas to provide life-saving assistance to our sisters and brothers oppressed by bombs and fear,” he said.
“Above all, I implore that the armed attacks cease, that negotiation and also common sense prevail and that international law is once again respected,” he added.
