The war in Ukraine could last “for years”, warned the secretary general of NATO in an interview published on Sunday by the German newspaper ‘Bild’, and urged Western countries to show support for kyiv while it lasts.
“We have to be prepared for this to last for years,” said Jens Stoltenberg. “We must not waver in our support for Ukraine, even if the costs are high, not only in terms of military support but also in rising energy and food prices,” he added.

These costs are nothing compared to what Ukrainians on the front line pay daily, pondered the head of the alliance. Stoltenberg added that if Russian President Vladimir Putin achieved his goals in Ukraine, such as when he annexed Crimea in 2014, “we would have to pay an even higher price.”
In this scenario, the secretary general urged the alliance countries to continue arms shipments to kyiv. “With additional modern weapons, it would increase the probability that Ukraine will be able to repel the troops of (Vladimir) Putin from Donbas,” he predicted. That region of eastern Ukraine is currently under partial control of Russian forces.
