Israeli Consul General in New York Asaf Zamir resigns over Netanyahu’s decision
Israeli Consul General in New York Asaf Zamir announced his resignation after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu decided to remove Defense Minister Yoav Galant from his post. The Consul General announced this in his Twitter-account.
Zamir noted that he could no longer represent the current government. According to him, the political situation in Israel has reached a critical moment. “The time has come for me to join the fight for Israel’s future to ensure that it remains a beacon of democracy and freedom in the world,” the statement said.
The dismissal of Galanta became known earlier on March 26. It was reported that the head of the defense department was fired after his criticism of judicial reform. The minister also urged the Israeli government to suspend the reform because of the threat to the security of the republic.
After that, the inhabitants of Israel took to the protest. Demonstrators gathered near government buildings in Tel Aviv and blocked traffic. Protesters also came to the home of the sacked minister to express their support.
