In light of the tension between Tel Aviv and Doha over the exchange deal, Israeli reports came out to reveal that Israel worked to consolidate the Palestinian division by facilitating the access of Qatari funds to Hamas.
Secret messages showed that it was Israel that courted Qatar and asked it to pump hundreds of millions of dollars into the Gaza Strip, with the encouragement and initiative of Benjamin Netanyahu and the head of the Mossad at the time, Yossi Cohen.
Israeli media reported that Netanyahu’s plan is part of a broader strategy aimed at taming Hamas and making it an effective counterweight to the Palestinian Authority, thus preserving the continued division between them, as well as encouraging division between Palestinian factions and preventing the establishment of a Palestinian state.
It is noteworthy that in 2018, Qatar began sending monthly sums to the Gaza Strip, where Hamas controls, in bags that the Qataris delivered via Tel Aviv, despite the refusal of the Palestinian Authority.
However, the Israeli strategy and bet on Qatari money to strengthen the internal Palestinian division backfired, as the events in Gaza demonstrated that the Palestinian position cannot be divided into two, which was translated by the positions of the Palestinian Authority and the leaders of the Fatah movement, which refuse to condemn or criticize Hamas and hold Israel fully responsible.
This is also confirmed by successive rounds of national reconciliation, although they were not fruitful, but they are attempts that emphasize that the issue of unity is an existing idea, and that both sides are searching for it, even if in China, where Hamas and Fatah held a meeting in Beijing to end the Palestinian division.
The two delegations are expected to return in mid-June to discuss a government that agrees and unifies Palestinian institutions.
