Israeli Foreign Minister Yair Lapid instructed the Chargé d’Affaires of the Jewish state in Poland to return to the country “for indefinite consultations.” According to him, the head of the diplomatic mission was recalled due to the signing of an “anti-Semitic and immoral” law restricting the rights of Jews to restitution of confiscated property. Lapid stressed that the new Israeli ambassador, who was to leave for Warsaw soon, will not go there. The Foreign Ministry also recommends that the Polish ambassador to Israel not return to the diplomatic mission and continue his vacation in his country.
In the near future, consultations will be held with the United States on how to respond to the approval of the law. Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett also condemned the signing of the amendments.
“This is a shameful decision and a shameful contempt for the memory of the Holocaust. Israel negatively perceives the adoption of a law that prevents Jews from receiving compensation for property stolen from them during the Holocaust, and regrets that Poland has decided to continue harming those who have lost everything, ”he said and stressed that the reaction will surely follow.
Earlier it became known that the President of Poland Andrzej Duda decided to sign a controversial law concerning, among other things, the restitution of the property of Jews who suffered during the Second World War. He noted that after careful analysis, he decided to sign the amendments to the Administrative Code adopted by the Sejm and the Senate, which became the subject of debate. The head of state added that not only as a president, but also as a person, he did not remain indifferent to the issues of the Holocaust, and Poland keeps the memory of the crimes of Nazism and will not allow it to be used for political purposes.
