Tension and protests in Israel, with demonstrators taking to the streets against the justice reform. Riots in Jerusalem not far from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s residence: the police intervened with a water cannon. Thousands of people also took to the streets in Tel Aviv, Haifa, Beersheba, as reported by the Jerusalem Post.
On a pivotal day, Netanyahu fired Defense Minister Yoav Gallant. Gallant in recent days had spoken out against the justice reform, strongly desired by the prime minister, which is inflaming the country. The now ex-minister had asked to stop the reform process and open dialogue with the opposition. The hot climate in the country has led to decreeing the suspension of lessons in universities.
USA – The United States say they are “deeply concerned” after Gallant was dismissed and support the need to find a “compromise”. The White House, according to the Times of Israel, reports a phone call with Netanyahu, in which President Joe Biden “expressed concern about justice reform”.
“We are deeply concerned about ongoing developments in Israel, which further underscore the urgent need for compromise,” the White House national security spokesman said following the removal of Israel’s defense minister.
