Bennett said that the cost of each interception would be only two dollars in the laser-based air defense system, which Israel hopes to deploy from 2023, with the aim of “neutralizing enemy missiles and drones.”
Israel currently relies on projection systems that launch interceptor missiles, which cost between tens of thousands and millions of dollars, to track such projectiles.
But the IronBeam system, a prototype of which was revealed last year, uses lasers to superheat and disable atmospheric threats.
Bennett predicted it would enter service by early 2023.
“This is a game changer, not only because we attack the enemy’s army, but also because we bankrupt it,” the Israeli prime minister said during a visit to state-owned Rafael Advanced Defense Systems.
Reuters quoted Bennett as saying in video footage released by his office: “Intercepting every missile has cost us a lot of money so far. Today they can invest tens of thousands of dollars in a missile, while we will invest two dollars in electricity to intercept that missile.”
