The Israeli Army announced on Sunday night (29) the death of yet another Hamas leader who operated outside the Gaza Strip. This time, Fatah Sherif Abu el-Amin, the main agent of the Palestinian terrorist group in Lebanon.
His death was effected in an air raid. According to information from Israeli intelligence, el-Amin would have strengthened Hamas’s relations with Hezbollah during the period of war, which will complete a year in the coming days, as well as being responsible for “increasing Hamas’ strength in Lebanon, in the field of recruitment of agents and acquisition of weapons”.
He “worked to advance Hamas’ interests in [Líbano]both politically and militarily,” Tel Aviv added.
The Palestinian group also confirmed his death, saying in a statement that the terrorist died alongside his wife and two children in Lebanese territory. According to the newspaper Times of Israelthe location of the attack was a camp for Palestinian refugees in the city of Tyre.
The Hamas terrorist leader in Lebanon was also head of the teachers’ union at the UN agency for Palestinian refugees, according to local press reports, however UNRWA confirmed to Times of Israel in a statement that el-Amin had been suspended in March for his “political activities”.
He “was a UNRWA employee who was placed on unpaid administrative leave in March and was being investigated following allegations UNRWA received about his political activities,” UNRWA said.
Earlier this year, Israel accused the UN agency of employing members of Hamas and other terrorist groups in the region, allowing them to indoctrinate civilians into an anti-Israel ideology over the years.
In August, Israel found explosives and weapons in UN agency bags in the Gaza Strip. In previous months, military operations were also carried out against UNRWA installations that resulted in the deaths of terrorists and the identification of other weapons.
This is the second reported assassination of a Hamas leader over the weekend. On Saturday (28), Israel announced a fatal attack against Ahmed Muhammad Fahd, head of Hamas in Syria.
