In an emergency session requested by Israel, the Israeli government and Iran exchanged threats at the UN Security Council this Wednesday (2).
Israel’s ambassador to the United Nations, Danny Danon, had requested the meeting in New York following the Iranian missile attack on his country on Tuesday (1st), a response from Tehran to the death of the leader of the terrorist group Hezbollah, Hassan Nasrallah, and to the Israeli ground incursion into southern Lebanon.
According to information from CNN and the Reuters agency, Iran’s ambassador to the UN, Amir Saeid Iravani, said that the attack occurred because Israel “only understands the language of force”.
“Each act of containment taken by Iran has only emboldened Israel to commit even greater crimes and further acts of aggression. Consequently, Iran’s response was necessary to restore balance and deterrence,” Iravani alleged.
“Iran is fully prepared to take further defensive measures, if necessary, to protect its legitimate interests and defend its territorial integrity and sovereignty against any acts of military aggression and the illegal use of force,” he added.
Danon, who the day before had warned that the Israeli response would be “painful”, stated that “Israel will defend itself”.
“We will act. And let me assure you, the consequences that Iran will face for their actions will be far greater than they could have imagined,” said the Israeli ambassador.
The United States and Russia defended their allies, respectively, Israel and Iran. “I will be clear: the Iranian regime will be held accountable for its actions. And we strongly warn Iran or its allies not to take actions against the United States, or other actions against Israel,” said U.S. Ambassador to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield.
For his part, Russian Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia said that Iran has demonstrated “exceptional” restraint in recent months and that the missile attack on Israel cannot be “presented as if everything happened in a vacuum, as if nothing was happening.” in Lebanon and Gaza, in Syria, in Yemen” – he stated, citing places where Israel carries out ground offensives and/or bombings against terrorist groups supported by Iran.
“But it happened, and it led to a new and very dangerous spiral of escalating conflict in the Middle East,” Nebenzia said.
