The new tires arrive at Silverstone
“With the new tires at Silverstone I hope they can turn the tables”the Ferrari team principal said bluntly Frederic Vasseur at the end of the promising Austrian Grand Prix for Ferrari. In fact, the new tires with a reinforced construction to cope with the exponential growth of the aerodynamic load to which tires are subject will make their debut in Great Britain. The manager of Pirelli Motorsport Mario Isola spoke about it in detail.

“The British Grand Prix will score the debut of a new dry tire constructionthe introduction of which anticipates the use of materials foreseen for 2024 – said the head of Pirelli Motorsport – the change was made necessary in consideration of the increase in performance of the single-seaters (in terms of loads and speeds) recorded from the first races of the season compared to the simulations that had been supplied by the teams to Pirelli last winter and in light of their probable evolution until the end of the championship. In recent years we have worked intensely in the field of simulation in order to be able not only to supply a product that complies with the performance targets defined by all stakeholders but also to be able to anticipate any problems and react promptly”.
“The new specification makes the tire more resistant to fatigue, but does not alter other technical parameters or its behavior on the track – he added – all the teams had the opportunity to test it at the last Spanish Grand Prix, when we made two additional sets available for each driver: the comments received were in line with our expectations, especially in terms of transparency of the performance. Furthermore, the new specification allows Pirelli to keep the pressures of the front and rear tires substantially unchanged compared to last yeareven in the presence of a significant average increase in loads”.
“The debut will take place on one of the traditionally more demanding tracks for the tyres – he concluded in relation to how convincing the Silverstone circuit is – it is no coincidence that in our internal scale of measurement Silverstone is at the top in terms of stress and lateral forces exerted, particularly on the front left tyre. With its fast corners, the track also puts a strain on the riders, who have to withstand lateral accelerations of over 5 g. The choice of compounds, whose range has not undergone any changes following the construction update, has remained unchanged compared to recent editions (C1 as Hard, C2 as Medium and C3 as Soft) at least in terms of nomenclature. In fact, today’s C1 is a new compound, which is placed in an intermediate position between C2 and C0, the updated denomination of the hardest compound in the 2022 range”.
