Among the most curious chapters inherent in these revolutions, there is no lack of the one that will focus on Pirelli tires, which will have larger dimensions than the tires currently used, with a significant increase in weight.
Already tested over the last few months, the track results have provided encouraging results in terms of stability and consumption, with a more contained degradation even over long distances, moreover traveled at high performance. Interviewed by Auto Motor und Sport, the Motorsport Director of the Milanese company, Mario Isola, has thus analyzed the tests conducted so far by teams and drivers, underlining the concrete scenario of being able to attend GPs characterized by a single pit stop: “The risk exists – he confirmed – our goal was to design a tire that would overheat less, so that riders could push for longer. During the tests, we asked them to take fast laps for the duration of the test. In the short runs, where the DRS is needed, we simulated the qualification without the race set-up, but we also tried different scenarios. For example, we asked to push each lap, in the long run, with a heavier car, or to cool the tires over the course of a lap, and then return to higher rates. In the latter case, we did it to see if the grip returned immediately. Results and feedback of the pilots – he added – They were very good and confirmed our expectations “.
Regardless of the performance of the tires, Isola finally focused on the weight of the tires, specifying the differences between those that will be adopted in 2022 compared to those currently in use: “We are still waiting for the latest version of the rims – commented – but the front wheel, including the rim, should be heavier than two and a half kg. Onrear axle, there will be an increase of 3 kg per tire. All in all – he concluded – we will reach 11 kg. If we analyze the single tire, the difference is a few hundred grams, with the real difference being that it will be characterized by the widened circle. Finally, the external diameter will increase from 660 mm to 720 ″.
