The spokesman for the jihadist group has called on his followers to take advantage of the war in Ukraine
The Islamic State jihadist group has called on its members and followers to carry out attacks in Europe taking advantage of the war in Ukraine, as part of a new campaign to avenge the death in February of its leader, Abu Ibrahim al-Hashimi al-Quraishi.
The group’s spokesman, Abu Umar al-Muhajir, has issued a speech on the occasion of the Ramadan holiday in which he announced the start of the campaign, called ‘Invasion in Revenge by the Two Sheikhs’, referring to Abu Ibrahim al Quraishi and his predecessor as spokesman, Abu Hamza.
Thus, he stressed that the conflict in Ukraine represents “an opportunity on a silver platter” for the followers of the jihadist group to carry out attacks in Europe. “There are embers of war there and the crusaders are there,” she said, according to Rita Katz, director of the SITE Intelligence Group — an agency specializing in tracking terrorist groups.
The spokesman for the jihadist group has also applauded the recent attacks perpetrated by members of the group in Israel and has asked that their example be followed, in which he calls for an increase in attacks in the country in the midst of rising tensions in Jerusalem.
The call for revenge for the death of Abu Ibrahim al Hashimi al Quraishi comes more than two months after the latter died during an operation by US special forces in the Syrian province of Idlib, located in the northwest of the country and controlled by various armed Islamist groups.
The late leader of the Islamic State took office in 2019 after the death of the group’s founder, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, also in an operation by US forces in Idlib. The jihadist organization named Abu Hassan al Qurashi as its new leader in March.
