Nacho Cano Musician and businessman
The musical about the young Indian woman, lover of Hernán Cortés and translator of the indigenous people in the lands of present-day Mexico, is the “high point” of her career
Somewhat weak from the flu, between coughs and coughs, he remembers that he is almost 60 years old. Gone are the days when he wore a naked torso and sweat profusely, surrounded by keyboards that he played like a man possessed. Nacho Cano (Madrid, 1963) fell apart every time he came out on stage as a one-man band for Mecano. He hasn’t acted for a long time but he refuses to throw in the towel. After the success of his musical ‘Today I can’t get up’, he has gotten into another adventure with a sickle and a kick. On September 15, he premiered the show ‘Malinche’ at the Ifema fairgrounds in Madrid. It is an idealized recreation of the relationship that Hernán Cortés had with a young Indian woman -extremely intelligent and charismatic, from an enemy tribe of the Aztecs- who served him as translator and advisor in the conquest of the lands of present-day Mexico.
-What does ‘Malinche’ mean in your career?
-The culmination! Music, the public and life have taught me a lot. In this musical I turn everything that I have inside.
-Licenses are not lacking in the show. The idyll between Hernán Cortés and Malinche draws attention.
-This musical is, above all, a work made from love. Fusion and effusion are claimed.
-Already. But the truth is that Malinche was a ‘gift’ that Cortés rejected. She gave it to Captain Portocarrero and she ended up marrying another soldier, Juan Jaramillo.
-Who can say what happened between Cortés and Malinche? I don’t know if he called him ‘churri’ and I’m not interested in finding out either. One fact is clear: they both had a son and were forerunners of miscegenation.
-In any case, you will not deny that it was a very unequal relationship.
-I am interested in putting the focus on another aspect.
-Which?
-Malinche was an intelligent woman, with a lot of personality, who earned everyone’s respect. Even her soldiers called her Doña Marina. She was fluent in several languages, acted as a translator and always appeared next to Cortés.
-Will Chanel re-enlist at some point?
-Yes! She had to leave the project due to commitments but she will return, of course he will return.
-What do you think that it has been defined by some as “Ayuso’s musical”?
-The only thing that interests me is the reaction of the public. Of course, I also tell him that I don’t care if they call him that. After all, Isabel Díaz Ayuso is a kind of Malinche.
-What fascinates you about the president of the Community of Madrid?
-They have wanted to crush her, even from her own party, but she resists. Her actions have helped the country and not just Madrid. She owe him a lot. She will make mistakes, like everyone else, but she is an incredible powerhouse.
Have you always been on the right?
-I believe in actions and people, not in acronyms. I also admire Felipe González, a fundamental figure in our history. I respect people who think and do.
-The recent death of Modesto Cano, textile businessman and poet, has served to reconcile his two children?
-What it has served for is to unite me even more with my father. He bequeathed me his watch and every minute I feel very, very close to him.
