Stephen Kick, the Nightdive Studios CEO, currently working on the System Shock remake, spoke about System Shock 3whose traces have been lost for two years now, explaining that the fate of the game, as well as potentially of the next chapters of the series, is in the hands of Tencent.
System Shock 3 was officially announced back in 2015 by OtherSide Entertainment. In 2020, the studio sold the rights of the sequel to Tencent and since then the game has completely disappeared from the radar, a sign that the project has probably been canceled, as suggested among other things by Warren Spector in an interview released in March.
According to the words of the CEO of Nightdive, only Tencent at the moment can decide whether or not to make a third chapter.
“When we acquired the rights to the franchise, we licensed the rights for the third game to Otherside’s Warren Spector and Paul Neurath. They then sold the rights to Tencent,” Kick explained.
“So Tencent currently has the rights to the third game and we have the rights to remake the first game and potentially a remake of the second. That’s pretty much the current situation.”
Kick also claims he doesn’t know if Spector or Neurath were involved in a similar project.
“I honestly don’t know. I know Paul and Warren are still making games, but that’s all I know right now.”
Kick added that Tencent not only owns the rights to System Shock 3, but potentially to a fourth and a fifth game.
“I think technically they could do a System Shock 4 and 5 as well, but they should release the third installment first. So, we’ll see.”
Staying on the subject, at the Gamescom 2022 Future Games Show we saw the remake of System Shock in action in a new gameplay trailer.
