When the creator of Shenmue Yu Suzuki appeared at the beginning of Tokyo Game Show’s presentation 110 Industries Late last year, fans of the Shenmue series raised some interesting questions, the most common of which was “why was Suzuki present?”
Before the release of the presentation video, neither Suzuki nor his development studio YS Net they had no obvious connection with the 110 Industries brand. So, to 110 devote the first five minutes of its TGS showcase to the legendary Japanese developer it seemed like an odd decision. Six months later, the real reason for Suzuki’s inclusion may have finally been revealed.
After seeing an Instagram post promoting the publisher’s upcoming third-person action game, Wanted: Dead, a Shenmue fan posted a comment suggesting that 110 could partner with Suzuki to create Shenmue 4. In all likelihood, this was probably little more than a wish on the part of the fan, but someone of 110 actually responded. In the response, the fan was asked “guess why [Suzuki] was on the TGS stream“.
While it’s perhaps unlikely that 110 will directly announce a project of this magnitude in this way, the publisher’s idea supporting Shenmue 4 doesn’t actually seem that far-fetched. It could certainly explain Suzuki’s presence in the TGS video.
The news of a potential fourth Shenmue game will undoubtedly please fans of the series, many of whom have waited decades for a conclusion to the epic Suzuki saga. This, coupled with the success of Shenmue the Animation, suggests that the future looks very bright for the franchise.
