A few weeks before the US election, Melania Trump publishes her book. She surprises with her support for abortion rights – unlike her husband Donald Trump.
Palm Beach – There has been talk of marriage for years Donald Trump and Melania Trump speculated. The former first lady is usually reserved in public. But just four weeks before US election she publishes a book – and gives one Insight into her marriage, her life during the Trump presidency and their views. “Melania: A Memoir” is now causing further speculation.
Melania Trump publishes her book before the US election: Ex-First Lady comments on the hand-holding drama
A moment in 2017 made the public pause: When the couple arrived at the airport in Tel Aviv, Melania Trump slapped her husband’s hand away. She walked half a step behind Donald Trump, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his wife. The video spread quickly and many saw the situation as a sign of marital crisis.
In her book, Melania Trump now comments on the situation seven years ago. She writes: “The red carpet simply didn’t accommodate four of us next to each other. It was a small, innocent gesture, nothing more.”
US election campaign: Melania Trump speaks out in favor of abortion rights – unlike Donald Trump
The astonishing thing in her publication: Melania Trump takes a different stance than her husband on the issue of abortion rights. In “Melania: A Memoir,” she writes, “It is imperative to guarantee women the autonomy to decide their desire to have children based on their own beliefs and without any interference or pressure from the government.”
Donald Trump said opposite Fox Newshe spoke to his wife about the book and told her to “follow her heart.” “We talked about it. And I said, you have to write what you believe. I’m not going to tell you what to do. You have to write what you believe,” he continued.
Abortion rights in the USA: Donald Trump responsible for overturning Roe vs. Wade – is now more moderate
The former first lady’s positions contrast with those of Trump, who has left abortion regulation to the states and has boasted of appointing three chief justices who were instrumental in to overturn the Roe vs. Wade ruling and abolish the constitutional right to abortion. This decision resulted in abortions being banned or severely restricted in 22 states.
Since then, Trump has tried to appear more moderate on the issue as the issue has become increasingly politically burdensome for Republicans. He recently said he would veto a nationwide abortion ban if he were to return to the White House – a position he had previously rejected. This about-face in turn caused discontent among abortion opponents in his own ranks.
Experts said opposite Newsweek, that while Melania Trump’s advocacy for abortion rights could hurt him among anti-abortion groups, it could also benefit him among moderate voters.
“She can’t stand him”: Democrats speculate about marriage – Conservatives disagree
Melania Trump’s statement came as a surprise to many – especially so shortly before the election. Some speculate that a public statement in favor of abortion rights shows another rift in the relationship. It was her way of subtly damaging her husband’s electoral prospects, Democratic campaign consultant James Carville said CNN. He continued: “I think she can’t stand him and I think that was very intentional. Not only does it show how much she supports freedom of choice over the body, but also how much more positive she is about immigration.”
Others criticize speculation. “If someone tries to read your mind, they won’t be able to. So he has no choice but to pull things out of his own head and replace them,” objected Fox News-Host Greg Gutfeld on his show. “I find it interesting that they mock Melania because she disagrees with her husband. Would they have applauded Melania if she had thought exactly the same way?” Gutfeld did not address whether and what dilemma Melania Trump’s views could bring the former president into.
New book: Melania Trump shows support for Donald Trump
But all the different assessments of Melania Trump’s intentions are just speculation. Overall, Melania Trump is highly supportive of her husband, and much of it is dedicated to boasting about her time as First Lady, judges said Daily Beast. At the same time, she took the opportunity to complain about “the media” and other supposed critics. (hk)
