«The answer is complex because both coffee (and the different molecules that compose it) and caffeine are able to stimulate the gastric secretion – explains Enzo Spisnidirector of the Laboratory of Nutrition Physiology of the University of Bologna -, therefore the stomach mucosa, to produce acid. In fact, when the stomach works, among the things that are secreted there is also hydrochloric acid. This means that if someone suffers from gastritis or has some problem related to gastric hyperacidity and the whole spectrum of problems related to it (for example gastroesophageal reflux disease), then coffee on an empty stomach is bad for you.”
