The Minister of Health in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, Saman Al-Barzanji, announced, on Monday, the outbreak of a cholera epidemic in the Sulaymaniyah governorate, and hundreds of residents of the city of Sulaymaniyah, the center of the governorate, and its suburbs, have been infected with this epidemic.
Al-Barzanji said in a press conference held in Sulaymaniyah, that his ministry urgently delivered medical supplies and large quantities of medicines and treatments, worth about one million dollars, to treat the injured.
He added, “The epidemic is accompanied by cases of acute diarrhea that causes kidney damage, especially in the elderly.”
The minister pointed out that “more than two hundred inmates in Sulaymaniyah prison have been infected with the epidemic, which has caused the death of two of them so far.”
The head of the Health Department in Sulaymaniyah, Sabah Al-Hawrami, confirmed that “the health situation in the province is still under control,” and that “the treatments required to treat the infected are available, and treating the epidemic is not difficult because its bacterial causes are known.”
