The Office of the Director of National Intelligence, the FBI and the US Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency reported on Wednesday (18) that Iranian hackers who stole information from Republican Donald Trump’s presidential campaign sent it to members of Democratic President Joe Biden’s then reelection team.
According to the American broadcaster CNN, the three government agencies reported in a joint statement that Iranian cyber agents “sent unsolicited emails to individuals then associated with President Biden’s campaign that contained an excerpt taken from stolen and non-public material from former President Trump’s campaign as text in the emails”.
The statement noted that there is no record of the Biden campaign responding to those messages, which were sent between late June and early July, before the president dropped out of the race and was replaced by Vice President Kamala Harris as the Democratic running mate.
In August, the FBI opened an investigation into Iran’s attempts to interfere in the US presidential election, scheduled for November 5. According to information from The Washington Post, criminal charges against the Tehran regime are expected to be filed soon for actions related to the campaigns of Trump, Biden and Kamala.
Morgan Finkelstein, national security spokesperson for Kamala’s campaign, told CNN that members of the Democratic team received messages on their personal emails and that there has been cooperation with law enforcement authorities since it was informed that the then Biden campaign was among the targets of Iranian operations.
“We are not aware of any material being sent directly to the campaign. Some individuals were targeted in their personal emails with what appeared to be spam or phishing attempts. We condemn in the strongest terms any effort by foreign actors to interfere in the U.S. elections, including this unwanted and unacceptable malicious activity,” Finkelstein said.
