Diplomatic headquarters held ceremony in Brasília; it was also in memory of those killed in Lebanon by Israeli attacks
The Iranian Embassy in Brazil held a religious ceremony on Thursday (October 3, 2024) in honor of Sayyd Hassan Nasrallah, the main leader of Hezbollah killed in an Israeli attack on Beirut, in the capital of Lebanon. The event at the Iranian diplomatic headquarters in Brasília also took place in memory of those killed in the Arab country by Israeli offensives.
The Palestinian ambassador, Ibrahim Alzeben, participated. In his speech, he called Hassan Nasrallah a “martyr”a term given to someone who dies in defense of a cause.
According to Alzeben, Nasrallah is part of a list of Palestinian, Lebanese, Syrian and Iraqi leaders who followed the “path of defense of freedom, independence and justice”.
“He [era] a great defender of the Palestinian cause. [Era] a defender of human dignity”, he stated.
The Palestinian ambassador also declared that the Palestinians and allies will continue to fight. “Yes, we will rise from the ashes and we will defend our Palestine, Lebanon, Arab countries [para serem] free and sovereign”he said.
Iran’s ambassador to Brazil, Abdollah Nekounam Ghadiri, began his speech by expressing gratitude for Nasrallah’s life.
He said that, although the death of the head of Hezbollah may represent the loss of a great defender of the Palestinian people, “there will be other heroes” to ensure the fight continues “until injustice and oppression are eliminated”.
Ghadirli also spoke about Iran’s military actions against Israel.
“Unlike the Zionist enemy, who in his cowardly war easily sheds the blood of children, women and civilians […] the Islamic Republic of Iran, in its self-defense, […] uses much of its military energy with extreme precision, focusing on military and security targets, taking the greatest care to avoid harm to civilians.”he said.
TENSION IN THE MIDDLE EAST
Lebanon and Israel are going through a moment of great tension in their relations. Israel and the Lebanese group Hezbollah have been fighting on the border since the start of the war in the Gaza Strip, on October 7, 2023, after an attack by Hamas, an ally of the extremist group.
The conflict between Israel and Hezbollah intensified in September, after 2 attacks on communication devices used by the extremist group. Lebanon accuses the Jewish country, which denies responsibility. The explosions of pagers and walkie talkies left at least 32 dead and more than 3,000 injured.
On Monday (September 30), the IDF (Israel Defense Forces) began a ground offensive in the southern part of Lebanon. According to the Israeli government, the operation is “limited, localized and targeted” against targets “terrorists” and Hezbollah infrastructure close to the border between the countries. On Wednesday (Oct 2), Tel Aviv carried out an air attack against Lebanese territory.
On Tuesday (1st October), Iran launched an attack with 180 missiles against Israel. The Iranian Revolutionary Guard said the offensive, considered the second largest in history against the Jewish country, was in response to the deaths of Hezbollah leaders, including Hassan Nasrallah.
According to Iran’s Foreign Minister, Seyed Abbas Araghchi, Iran’s action against Israel is complete if there is no retaliation from the Jewish country. However, the Israeli government has stated that the Iranian offensive will result in “consequences” and that the Persian country “will pay” by the attacks.
This Friday (Oct 4), Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, stated that the country could carry out new attacks against Israel if necessary. He also said that the offensive against Tel Aviv on Tuesday (1st.Oct) was the “lesser punishment” what the Iranian Army could do against the “appalling crimes” of the Jewish country.
