The Iranian authorities have revoked the death sentence that had been imposed on the activist and trade unionist Sharifeh Mohammadi. His lawyer Ami Raissian announced this to the Shargh newspaper, explaining that Mohammadi, 45, will have to face a new trial. The activist was arrested on 5 December last year by Tehran intelligence agents and was sentenced to death by the revolutionary court of Rasht, in the Gilan region, in northern Iran, on charges of ”armed rebellion ” against the Islamic Republic.
Before being arrested, Mohammadi was independently carrying out trade union battles to see the rights of women in Gilan province recognised. She is also accused of belonging to the Kurdish Komala party, which Tehran considers a terrorist organization. Her husband Siros Fathi was also arrested for his commitment to Sharifeh’s release, only to be later released.
