The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) reported this Tuesday (1st) that Iran launched ballistic missiles against its territory, as warned earlier by American government sources. The action, which would be in retaliation for the recent attacks against Hezbollah, caused the activation of anti-aircraft alarms across the country.
Tel Aviv reported that it intercepted “a large number” of the 180 ballistic missiles launched against Israel this Tuesday, with support from the United States, which helped in prior identification of the attack and defense, according to the IDF.
The Army issued a statement shortly after the attack began calling on the population to find shelter and remain in protected areas while the launches took place. “You are being advised to remain in a protected area until further notice,” the military said.
In Jerusalem, in addition to the sound of sirens, missiles intercepted in the sky and explosions could also be heard.
The Israeli defense added in the statement that the explosions heard across the country are “interceptions or impacts” of shrapnel or rockets in Tel Aviv, near the Dead Sea, in the south and in the Sharon region.
There is no damage to the Israeli Air Force’s “competence” in the attack, and planes, air defenses and air traffic control are operating normally, according to the attacked country’s military.
Iran’s Revolutionary Guard confirmed the attack, saying it launched dozens of missiles toward Israel. Furthermore, Tehran warned that if the country retaliated, its response would be “more crushing and ruinous.”
In a statement, the Iranian mission to the UN also commented on the latest events. They described the attack as a “legal, rational and legitimate response to the Zionist regime’s terrorist acts against Iranian citizens and interests and for violating the sovereignty of the Islamic Republic.”
This is Iran’s first attack against Israel since April, when it attacked two Israeli air bases with missiles and drones in response to the killing of seven members of the Revolutionary Guard at the Iranian consulate in Damascus, in an action that did not cause major damage.
Israel military summit meets
Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant met this Tuesday with the Chief of Staff, Herzi Halevi, and other military leaders in the country to assess the threat situation from Iran.
Joe Biden’s government also met this afternoon to assess the situation in the Middle East, according to the White House.
Vice President Kamala Harris and her national security advisers participated in the meeting. In a statement, Washington wrote: “They reviewed the status of US preparations to help Israel defend itself against these attacks and protect US personnel in the region.”
