Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, is deeply concerned about the possibility of Israeli agents infiltrating the highest levels of the Iranian regime.
Khamenei’s concern was intensified after the elimination of Hassan Nasrallah, then leader of the terrorist group Hezbollah, in an Israeli attack carried out in the south of Beirut, Lebanon, according to Iranian sources interviewed by Reuters, which released a report on this matter this Wednesday- fair (2).
According to ReutersKhamenei would have warned Nasrallah about the risk of infiltration by Israeli agents in Lebanon and about a possible attack by the Israelis that could culminate in his death, even asking him to leave Lebanon and take refuge in Iran before the attack in Beirut. However, Nasrallah, apparently confident in the security of his internal network, ended up not accepting the invitation and was killed during the Israeli bombing that took place on September 27th. Iranian general Abbas Nilforoushan, commander of the Revolutionary Guards, who was with Nasrallah at the time and was a man of Khamenei’s confidence, also died in the attack. According to Reutersit was Nilforoushan who delivered Khamenei’s warning to Nasrallah.
After the death of the Lebanese terrorist leader, the Iranian regime intensified its investigations into the possible infiltration of Israeli spies within its own ranks, especially in the Revolutionary Guard, raising suspicions especially about members of the Guard who maintain contacts and family abroad. Khamenei also personally authorized missile strikes against Israel in response to Nasrallah’s death.
“The trust that held everything together has disappeared,” said an Iranian official interviewed by Reuters. Another source told the agency that the Islamic regime’s supreme leader “no longer trusts anyone.” According to the Reutersseveral arrests have already been made in Tehran, focusing on individuals suspected of collaborating with Israel. Khamenei, according to information, was taking refuge in a “safe” location inside Iran in recent days, especially this Tuesday (1st), when the attacks against Israel took place.
With Nasrallah’s death, Hezbollah has faced a leadership crisis, the Reuters. The organization has not yet officially named a successor, although sources have already mentioned some new names, fearing that any new leader could become an immediate target of Israel. Israel’s elimination of the terrorist leader represented a heavy blow for Iran, which, at this moment, sees its main military force on the border with Israel weakened.
