On iPhone 16, the “Action” button will become touch, picking up the legacy of the change introduced with iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max and taking it to the next level.
The current advancement in iPhone design has brought a significant innovation to the 15 line, which was initially limited to the Pro models.
In iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, the traditional vibration selector it was replaced by a button called “Action”, which was received very positively by Apple customers.
A year later, we will find this innovation extended to all models except iPhone SE, if it ever comes out; unlike the old mechanical button, regarding the 16 range the button will be touchin an evolution similar to the one that saw the Home button transform starting from the iPhone 7.
One button for multiple actions
Originally, Apple was planning to implement a button that was capacitive from the first iterationor the current one represented in the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max devices.
However, due to unresolved technical issues, the decision was made in favor of a traditional button with mechanical actuation.
The adoption of a capacitive solution will result in a force sensor located under the button.
This, simulating a click, will offer a tactile experience similar to the Home button of the iPhone 7 and 8, as well as the trackpad of the MacBook.
The sensor will recognize the amount of force exerted, translating it into one or more different actions.
While the vibration switch function was previously limited and default, the new button allows you to select from several optionssuch as turning silent mode on or off, turning the flashlight on or off, opening the camera with different selectable modes and much more.
Some of these functions may be integrated later via updates from Apple.
The new Apple range promises well
According to information reported by Macrumorsin 2024 the “Action” button will also be present in the models iPhone 16 and 16 Plus.
There is a possibility that this button will be included in the next edition of the iPhone SE in 2025, however, at the moment, this is only speculation and changes may occur before mass production begins.
The supposed future “Action” button will be named “Atlas“, and it will be another of the changes in the new Apple range that we are currently aware of, similarly to the changes on the battery.
At the moment, it seems that Apple is evaluating the possibility of changing its dimensions, making it larger than the one present on the iPhone 15 Pro and making it more similar to the volume keys, also in keeping with the larger dimensions expected for the iPhone 16.
