Kirsty Coventry is the new President of the International Olympic Committee IOC. The former swimming Olympic champion from Zimbabwe received the majority of the 109 votes in the first ballot at the 144th General Assembly in Costa Navarino in Greek. After twelve years she follows the German Thomas Bach at the head of the IOC. She is the first woman in this office.
Coventry prevailed against Juan Antonio Samaranch Junior (Spain), Sebastian Coe (Great Britain), David Lappartient (France), Johan Eliasch (Great Britannia/Sweden), Prince Feisal Al-Hussein (Jordan) and Morinari Watanabe (Japan).
