The evolution of artificial intelligence in the medical field runs fast and wins the market. The software platform V7founded by Albert Rizzoli and Simon Edwardsson in 2018, announced today in Chicago at the annual meeting of the RSNA, the Radiological Society of North America, that it had raised $33 million from Radical Ventures and Temasek, the Singapore fund. A record for the data and training platform category for Ai. V7’s revolutionary software allows companies to develop artificial intelligences that learn to read medical images, diagnostics, documents and videos at a specialized and professional level.
“Artificial intelligence allows us to store and analyze billions of pieces of information, such as those produced by the human body, in a more precise and rapid manner. But above all without it being programmed by hand as the computer science once knew. The software V7 is already used by 30 companies in the biomedical sector and is present in 75% of FDA-approved devices. The goal is to allow AI to be better than any doctor, this is because it is able to absorb a huge amount of data: there are 5,000 doctors, including radiologists and pathologists, who together have contributed to the knowledge bank of V7. We already have 300,000 difficult clinical cases in which artificial intelligence has made a contribution to being able to arrive at a diagnosis” .
The software “starts learning to distinguish objects such as pedestrians in a video, healthy and diseased organs in an MRI with only 30 manual examples, after which it continues the autopilot training process with the help of human corrections – he explains – This technology is used above all in the field of prevention, since by acquiring a patient’s health data, it is able to predict the probability of developing an organ pathology”. The next steps for V7 “are to have more presence on the US market, which is the main one for us, but there is the vein of ultrasound medicine (for example in mammography) which is developing”, continues Rizzoli. And is Italy racing or chasing after in the field of AI in medicine? “There are many brains specialized in this field who are returning to Italy after the pandemic – observes Rizzoli – we are still a little behind the USA but also in our country it is a developing sector”.
What is V7’s secret? “It is capable of connecting millions of data concerning a patient’s body, ranging from the heart to the brain to the lungs, with a holistic vision. The next step will be to have sensors connected to the body, from which to understand in zero time how he is the person who wears them. In the right hands, AI can reveal millions of diagnoses, saving lives.” Its implementation ranges from diagnostics to manufacturing, from technological agriculture to industry 4.0. The name V7 derives from areas of the human visual cortex (composed of areas V1 through V6), and thus proposes a hypothetical seventh region for computers.
“V7 revenue tripled in 2022. Companies developing AIs with V7 include Ge Healthcare, Huawei, MIT, Siemens, and hundreds of others making autonomous vehicles, radioactive waste disposal robots, , and other autonomous devices both on the network and in the physical world. As of 2020, 95% of customers in the Business category of V7 have remained subscribed to the platform, which now contains over 1 petabyte of education data enabling the understanding of hundreds of work scenarios “, concludes the company.
