Chairman of the Investigative Committee (IC) of the Russian Federation Alexander Bastrykin instructed to open a criminal case in connection with the illegal decision of the Prosecutor General’s Office of Ukraine to bring charges against war correspondent of the WarGonzo project Semyon Pegov. About it February 4 reported in the Telegram channel of the RF IC.
The day before, the Ukrainian Prosecutor General’s Office charged Pegov in absentia with creating “propaganda materials on military topics.”
“As part of the criminal case, the investigation will identify specific officials of the Prosecutor General’s Office of Ukraine who made an illegal decision to bring a Russian citizen to criminal responsibility,” the RF IC said in a statement.
Earlier, on January 12, Russian journalists were awarded government media awards for 2022. All 20 laureates are journalists and war correspondents covering events in new regions of Russia. Among them, the military commander and founder of the WarGonzo project Semyon Pegov was also awarded.
On November 24, Russian President Vladimir Putin awarded Pegov with the Order of Courage for the courage and dedication shown in the performance of his professional duty.
Prior to that, on October 23, Pegov was wounded near Donetsk, blown up by a prohibited mine “Petal”. At the scene of the incident, members of the Somalia battalion provided him with first aid, after which he was evacuated and operated on at a medical facility.
The special operation to protect the Donbass, the beginning of which Russian President Vladimir Putin announced on February 24, continues. The decision was made against the background of the aggravation of the situation in the region due to shelling by the Ukrainian military.
