Mexico City.- The municipality of Paraíso, Tabasco, asked the federal government to investigate the change in color of the waters of the Seco River, which surrounds the Dos Bocas refinery, as well as the death of fish, allegedly due to contamination from that plant.
Last week, hundreds of dead fish appeared in the waters of the Seco River, in the town of Puerto Ceiba, and, according to local media, the fishermen blamed the Olmeca Refinery, which was inaugurated in 2022.
Undersecretary for Sustainability and Climate Change Gary Arjona Rodriguez said that research into fish mortality is a federal matter.
Residents also reported that the waters of the Seco River were painted brown, almost red.
“Apparently there was a hydrocarbon spill inside Dos Bocas and they poured some chemical to disperse it and make the oil go to the bottom and this has caused the color of the water,” said a municipal worker from Paraíso.
On Thursday, the municipality governed by Anita Castellanos reported that the Environmental Protection and Sustainable Development Directorate went to the site and took water samples from the Seco River.
“The results are still awaited,” the municipality said in a statement.
“Likewise, the municipal government requested the prompt and immediate intervention of other state and federal agencies for the thorough analysis of the waters and to be able to accurately inform the population.”
President Andrés Manuel López Obrador confirmed last Monday that the Olmeca Refinery will begin production next Saturday.
“On Saturday, the entire Dos Bocas refinery will begin to fully produce, it will produce around 250,000, 260,000 barrels of gasoline daily,” he said when announcing a visit to the plant.
