“Sport is a powerful social tool and Aisla”, the Italian Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Association, “celebrates this important International Day with the message from the president of CONI Giovanni Malagò according to which 'the movement is a powerful ally against the effects produced by degenerative pathologies and an effective tool to combat the main diseases that threaten the health of the community. Sport has a social and solidarity value of inestimable importance, expressed through meritorious and virtuous initiatives, capable of amplifying the meaning that pertains to our world”. Fulvia Massimelli, president of Aisla, underlines this in a note, adding: “Sport and health have always been closely linked and allow us to share experiences and values. Ours is a shared need to act and commit ourselves concretely, to find new solutions and improve our world and make it more habitable for future generations.”
The realization of this special day becomes an opportunity of encouragement and hope for Aisla, we read in a note. To underline the value of unity and solidarity, there will be five sporting events that will embrace Italy from 7 to 21 April (for more information www.aisla.it).
The 7th edition of the Massimiliano Canestrelli Trophy will take place on Sunday 7 April – the note details – in Montecatini Terme (Pistoia). This cycling competition is a demonstration of solidarity aimed at raising funds to support physiotherapy treatments essential to maintain the functions and autonomy of ALS patients. All Uisp, Fci and Acsi members can participate, up to a limit of 200 people (for information call 335 7456041). On the same day, the 13th Caminada promoted by the Bulgorello Sports Association will be held in Cadorago (Como): the non-competitive event will start at 9 in the Lura Park and includes an easy access route and a community lunch after the awards ceremony . The proceeds will be donated to the Aisla Como section to assist people with ALS and their families (for information contact the number 339 6173523).
On Saturday 13 April, a charity basketball match is on the agenda in Savona in memory of Gabriele Botta, a player of this sport who recently lost his battle against ALS. The initiative is organized by old teammates and rivals and the funds raised are intended for assistance services for people with ALS in the province of Savona-Imperia (to request information 347 9643223 and 348 0821095). And again: on Sunday 14 April the 46th edition of 'Via Vai' returns to Giussano (Monza Brianza), a traditional non-competitive running event sponsored by Aisla and organized by the Italian Alpine Club of Giussano. The event will include routes of 5 and 10 km, the funds raised will be donated to the 'Io Corro con Giovanni' association to promote scientific research on ALS.
Still. Monday 15 April, in Liguria and Lower Piedmont, will be the turn of the second edition of the 'Stronger Together' campaign, supported by Maker in favor of Aisla Liguria, which supports over 150 families fighting against ALS. With a minimum donation of 19 euros, it will be possible to take advantage of sports activities for two weeks in 11 facilities in the area (for information 349 3764134). At the end of the sporting activities, the Italian Athletics Federation and the Sicily Regional Committee of CONI give their patronage to the first edition of the Pian del Lago Trophy, which will take place on Sunday 21 April in Caltanissetta. This latest sporting event involves cadets, debutants, students and seniors, supporting the work of the Association. Daniela Amico, contact person for Aisla Caltanissetta (contact 327 1253584), will be present during the awards ceremony.
There are many sports ambassadors who have supported Aisla for years. The Gemini Team has been using mountain bikes since 2010, just as Fabio Lucioni traveled 300 km by bike from Lecce to Benevento in 2019, and also like the 18 marathons covered by Andrea Arnaboldi, known as l'Arna. The customized Aisla Sup board has accompanied the champion Riccardo Rossi since 2012. And since 2004 the Italian Baseball and Softball Federation (Fibs) has honored with the association the memory of the famous 'iron man' Lou Gehrig, who suffered from ALS on 2 June 1941.
From North to South – concludes the note – Italy will be crossed by athletes, amateurs and sports enthusiasts to remind us that it is always 'We' that makes the difference. And if it is true that, as the sports novelist Frank Deford said, 'sport is at its best when it unites us', Aisla celebrates this International Day with great commitment in a collective embrace that wins in the name of closeness with others.
