International Relations | EU leaders gathered for a summit, Prime Minister Marin hopes for a serious discussion on energy prices

Prime Minister Sanna Marin (sd) considered the proposals from the commission, among other things, regarding the regulation of gas prices, to be insufficient.

EU countries the leaders will gather on Friday in Prague for an informal summit meeting, where, among other things, what has just been agreed will be presented eighth sanctions package against Russia.

In addition, the meeting is intended to discuss the rise in energy prices, said the Prime Minister Sanna Marin (sd) upon arrival at the meeting place.

“I hope that we will have a very serious discussion about the fact that we need more powerful tools to push down the price of energy,” Marin said.

According to Marin, possible measures would be, for example, price ceilings.

On Thursday, Marin said that Finland has an open attitude to all proposals to curb energy prices, including the gas price ceiling. Marin liked proposals from the commission, among other things, regarding gas price regulation as insufficient.

Some EU countries have demanded a price ceiling for gas, but others are dismissive of it.

Marin stated when going to the meeting that Finland does not support proposals for support packages similar to the EU’s joint recovery instrument. Instead, according to him, better coordination and mutual discussion is needed.

“No support packages, no compensation will be enough if we don’t reduce the price of electricity with joint actions.”

According to Marin, if the countries do a lot of their own local support measures, the EU can drift into a situation that weakens the functionality of the common internal market. He believes that this will also be discussed among the member countries on Friday.

Also President of the EU Commission Ursula von der Leyen stated upon arriving at the meeting place that price ceilings are being discussed.

According to Von der Leyen, it’s now a matter of what kind of price ceilings should be and what they should target. At the same time, he reminded that Friday’s meeting is about communication and no official decisions will be made there today.
